Somatic Experiencing

SOMATIC EXPERIENCING® (SE) psychobiological trauma resolution is a potent method for resolving trauma symptoms and relieving chronic stress. It is the life’s work of Dr. Peter A. Levine, resulting from his multidisciplinary study of stress physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, and medical biophysics, together with over 45 years of successful clinical application. The SE approach releases traumatic shock, which is key to transforming PTSD and the wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma.

The SE approach offers a framework to assess where a person is “stuck” in the fight, flight or freeze responses and provides clinical tools to resolve these fixated physiological states.

This is the most influential modality and lens in my work. It affords one of the most comprehensive ways of addressing old patterns of “stuckness” while integrating cognition, emotion, sensation and behavior. I received my SEP (Somatic Experiencing Practitioner) certificate in 2014 and am an active member of the assisting community for the Somatic Experiencing Institute.

inner relationship focusing

rain.jpg

I am a Certified Focusing Professional and Trainer (2023) through Ann Weiser Cornell’s certification program. IRF is a practice developed by Ann Weiser Cornell and Barbara McGavin based on Eugene Gendlin’s Focusing.

Focusing is defined as a practice that develops an internal conversation based on an individual’s felt-sense. Gendlin “eventually realized the individuals who were able to ‘succeed’ in therapy were those who paused and revisited unclear, vague, or difficult aspects of their experiences and history. When people in treatment spent time in therapy focusing on these things they could not at first put into words, they often eventually were able to achieve clarity on the issue and make changes as a result.”

IRF provides the opportunity for a person to cultivate and create a compassionate relationship with themselves. The language of IRF is one of its defining strengths as a skill and toolset for anyone to learn, and I deeply enjoy offering this in my practice! Along with Ann Weiser Cornell and her faculty, I am fortunate to have had Maureen Gallagher (who is faculty at SEI and integrates IRF with SE) as my on-going consultant.

emdr

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from many different treatment approaches. To date, EMDR has helped millions of people of all ages relieve many types of psychological stress.

I completed my basic training with Laurel Parnell in 2009, and I find EMDR an effective tool to address and loosen ‘negative beliefs’ about the self, as well as support a person to re-imagine ways of experiencing old events which otherwise feel stuck.

art therapy

Art therapy is a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by the art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem. A goal in art therapy is to improve or restore a client’s functioning and his or her sense of personal well-being. Art therapy practice requires knowledge of visual art (drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art forms) and the creative process, as well as of human development, psychological, and counseling theories and techniques.

Art therapy was my first training, and I obtained my masters degree in art therapy in 2003 from NYU. It is a wonderful approach to help people ‘get out of their heads’ and give a fresh new perspective to old experiences. Creativity and play are also inherently healing, and visual art offers an opportunity to play.

se informed table work

If we both feel a person is a good candidate for table work, I provide touch-based services that are solidly based in Somatic Experiencing principles that can support embodiment and healing.

SRR: Developed by Somatic Experiencing Practioners Kathy Kain and Stephen Terrell, the Somatic Resilience and Regulation is a three-module program that focuses on understanding the effects of trauma during early development. It provides techniques for working with both children and adults, including recognizing developmental trauma in its adult disguises. SRR certificate completed April 2018.

TST: Training developed by Kathy Kain for mental health providers, touch therapists, and other somatic practitioners to develop and increase skills to support the body in the resolution of traumatic stress symptoms.

TST Module 1 completion: February 2019
